IT ALL BEGAN WITH GO GO BOOTS
Some of go go dancing's roots are in West Hollywood.

The french terms "à gogo" (galore) and "la gogue" (joy or happiness) morphed into go-go-go for "a high energy person." In the early 60's, the slang term "go" meant something that was "all the rage", and these new knee high boots certainly were! Girls at the Peppermint Lounge in New York City wearing go go boots would get up on tables and dance the twist. They were so fun and entertaining that promoters started hiring them as entertainment.

"High energy" girls "galore", wearing "all the rage" boots pouring out "joy" and "happiness" caught on like wildfire and the go go phenomenon was born. Who could resist the infectious energy?

The Whisky a Go Go, a straight rock nightclub at 8901 Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood helped popularize go go dancing by being the first go go club to have dancers in cages suspended from the roof. The resurgance of Go Go in West Hollywood in 2010 led Whisky a Go Go to revive their WhiskyaGOGO girls!

The gogo movement spread to male go go dancers in gay bars where they were called "go go boys" beginning in the late 60's. The first Groovy Guy contest was in 1968.

The entire go go phenomenon started to fade in the 70's as disco became popular which was also popularized in West Hollywood clubs. Disco dancing patrons jumped up on the pedestals themselves, so there was no longer a need to pay a gogo dancer. Madonna helped fuel a resurgence in the late 80's featuring go go dancers in her MTV music videos. Go go dancing became "all the rage"! The gay bars discovered that having go go boys made places more fun, popular, and profitable.
